mallicoat. >>> good morning everyone, it's friday december 7th. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:30 now. a 7.3 earthquake struck today near japan. >> it was centered off the northeastern coast. several people have been injured. cate cauguiran is in the news room to tell us the tsunami warning apparently has been lifted. >> it was lifted two hours after the quake hit. other hit. originally authorities issued a warning that a tsunami of two meters could hit the coast. there are no reports of immediate damage although traffic was stopped in some places to check on the roads. one city in the area reported a small tsunami, but the pacific tsunami warning center says there is no widespread risk. it did cause continuous shaking in some areas. buildings in tokyo were reportedly swaying for at least several minutes. now, this is the same region that was hit by a massive earthquake in march of last year. that quake triggered fuel rod melt downs at the nuclear plant killing at least 60 people as it swept away cars, boats and homes. thankfully this quake is nothing compared to last
i'm michelle griego. >> it is monday. hi everyone, i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5. and we begin the hour with breaking news. firefighters are at the scene of a big rig fire. >> the fire is on the 2600 block of fairmont drive and according to dispatch, at least one person was trapped inside the cab of the truck for some time. it's been burning for more than an hour and a half. downed power lines may be on the truck making it difficult to douse the flames. pg&e is on the scene and we have crew on the way. >> in the meantime, let's check traffic and find out if it's causing any problems. >>> because of the activity, they have closed roads in and around that area, especially fairmont. this is at the 2600 block of fairmont. it is shut down at last check between 580 and lake chabot. use an alternate in the meantime. we'll continue to keep you updated. fairmont is completely blocked off between 580 and lake chabot. as you work your way through the east bay, the freeways are looking pretty good. we have a broken down vehicle at the incline of the bay bridge. traffic early, still quiet a
are opening this morning. >>> good morning. it's wednesday, december 26. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm brian hackney. frank is off today. it's now 29 minutes after 5:00. >> dangerous and deadly storms moved across southern states on christmas day. >> severe weather is blamed for at least two deaths and knocked out power to more than 100,000 people this several states. there were more than 30 reports of tornadoes from texas to alabama, homes businesses and churches damaged. ashley rodriguez takes to us one neighborhood where residence say this christmas they are just happy to be alive. >> reporter: this is one of the 12 homes that law enforcement here in pearl river county says were completely wiped out by this tornado on christmas day. at this particular home here in the mcneil area, this is what's left of the slab, this is what's left of the wall, and this is what's left of this family's life. and the damage trail extends half a mile on this property off highway 11, the front and back of this custom antebellum home gone but the homeowner says lives are more important. tell me how you feel w
lane closed in through that area. there was an overnight accident. frank and michelle will have more on that coming up. slight delays on the eastbound side until roadwork is cleared out of the way. great highway closed both directions between sloat boulevard and lincoln way of that's due to weather conditions so use an alternate through there. no other delays around the area. 880 so far, so good, northbound looking good towards the maze. southbound 880 clear all the way towards hayward. no delays if you are taking hayward to the san mateo bridge. that's a look at traffic. frank? >> okay, i'll take it. 5:05 now. >> oh, i'll take it. >> i'll let you. >>> new this morning, a high- speed chase caused the chp patrol car to flip over in livermore. this is new video just into the newsroom now. it happened just before 4 a.m. on eastbound 580 between greenville and north flynn roads. the chp was chasing at high speeds when the patrol car flipped. the driver sped away. other officers stopped the car in tracy. both officers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. >>> another crash this
. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:01. we are on the scene of breaking news in the east bay at an apartment fire that started about an hour ago. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in hayward getting the latest. >> reporter: that apartment completely destroyed and there was a mother who lived there with her young son. she told us that she thinks somebody threw something into her home and that's what caused it to set on fire. so arson investigators are on scene. they are trying to sort all of this out but we are on dixon street right by the bart station. this was a one-alarm fire but again it caused significant damage and firefighters say that that family won't be able to return home. nobody was hurt. pg&e crews also on scene securing some lines and we are still waiting to get some more information but as i said arson investigators are on scene. elissa harrington, cbs 5. >>> new this morning, a fire in east oakland is believed to have been started by squatters. the single-alarm fire happened around 1:30 this morning on 64th and international boulevard. of
from newtown. >>> reporter: good morning, michelle. several parents here in newtown, connecticut continue to face the unthinkable burying their children. five funerals are scheduled for today and people are still reeling. hundreds gathered for memorial service to remember sandy hook elementary principal dawn hochsprung. she died trying to stop the shooter after he broke into the school. >> you don't have to know her. you just have to know what she did is an act of selflessness and that touches humanity. >> reporter: hochsprung's funeral is just one of five that will be held today. tuesday saw two more children laid to rest. 6-year-old james mattioli loved sports and math. his family called him a numbers guy. and jessica rekos loved horses. she wanted a cowgirl hat for christmas. yesterday was a day of mixed emotions for many parents and students as school reopened in newtown for everyone except the kids who attend sandy hook elementary. >> so, like, surreal. >> reporter: there were some who stayed away. >> my neighbor up the street, her kid didn't come back. >> reporter: but ther

bay area bridges. >>> good morning, it's thursday, december 20. i'm michelle griego. >> i'm brian hackney. frank has the morning off. time now straight up 5:00. >>> all clear for one peninsula neighborhood. >> that's after authorities discovered volatile chemicals inside a home. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is san mateo with more. >> reporter: the fire department didn't know what they were dealing with so they did everything by the book. here's where they bagged up sand to try to keep these chemicals safe before they blew it up. this is the house where the chemicals were found in san mateo on parrott drive. the windows boarded up. it was an exercise for all of the emergency responders involved and for the entire neighborhood. the fire department got a call around 4:30 yesterday afternoon saying the person who lives this is house found a cache of chemicals in the basement that had apparently been here for more than 30 years. >> it was acid and ether. we were told they were -- something that needed to be taken care of on site. they couldn't transport it. it's very dangerous. the chan
'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:00 on the nose. and we begin with some breaking news in san francisco. a huge water break after a car slammed into a fire hydrant about an hour ago. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is by folsom and 2nd and joins us live in the city with more. i guess they got it capped, but it was really something about a half hour ago or so, right? >> reporter: that's exactly right, frank. the new concern now is actually structural safety. i want to show you, they blocked off the roads in this area. that is essex off of folsom here and they say they're going to block all four lanes right there because they want to sort of assess the damage of what happened. but we want to show you some video that we shot earlier. you can get a look at that gushing water at least 40 feet high is what we're told. and about 1,000 -- tens of thousands of gallons of water that had come out of that break. now, from what we could see, that car knocked the hydrant completely out. we heard reports this started just before 4 a.m. this morning. san francisco police told us offi
. >> good morning. it's tuesday, december 4. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:00 now on your tuesday. >>> a new word just in the past few minutes that all muni trains are back on track. the system had two issues a the powerrage and accident with serious injuries and a power outage. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in san francisco where power in the subway is back on. that's good news for commuters. >> reporter: i'm sure. we actually were talking to a commuter and no kidding as i was trying to explain the situation, that j line pulled up and then the driver said nope, we're headed in town or downtown. so yes, it is a sigh of relief for morning commuters. everything should be free- flowing on the muni trains. but this all started after again that storm damage that you mentioned earlier. a power outage was caused. the electrical problem happened as commuters were headed home last night. this morning crews said it was a blown transformer on van ness that started this whole muni madness. >> apparently, it was damaged with water damage from yesterday [ indis
. cate. >> reporter: frank, michelle, that's right. if you can take a looker the crime tape is up here in this area. officers are still on scene gathering evidence and they have been here for quite some time. we do have video of when they first got on scene though. berkeley police tell us they got a caught around 11:30 last night and officers found a cyclist by longfellow middle school just off derby street. he fell off his bike along the sidewalk and he had at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead on scene. if you come back out live the award and sacramento streets, that crime tape is still up. there are several police officers here -- not officers, but rather cars here on scene continuing their investigation. and we want to make note that officers have not released a suspect description at this time. and they still don't have a motive for the shooting. reporting live in berkeley, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >>> one person in critical condition, two others serious after a shooting in oakland near lake merritt around 10:30 last night. officers found a 50-year-old man shot outside a
's wednesday, december 12. i'm michelle griego. >> good morning, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:31. we begin with a toddler who was taken to the hospital this morning after a suspected drunk driver crashed into an apartment building in san jose at 3 a.m. on taylor street near highway 101. police say the truck slammed into the room where the child was sleeping. the driver tried to get away but was stopped and taken into custody. no word on the extent of the toddler's injuries. but we'll keep you updated as we get updates ourselves. >>> 5:31. a cold storm bringing a little bit of rain and a chance of a little bit of snow on some of the peaks around the bay area. >> i think if we snow it will be a dusting very support radic but that's pretty exciting. we have showers out on the roads. wet early on. we could have brief downpours so watch out for that. you will see a few showers in san mateo and scattered around the bay area but the worst is gone. this is a cold storm so there's not a lot of moisture with t behind that we just get into more clouds and scattered showers this morning. the temperatu
i'm michelle griego. >> we love friday! hi,everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. it's 5:00. we begin with developing news from a shaky southern california. >>> a magnitude 6.4 earthquake rattling the region about 2:36 this morning. epicenter was off the coast near the united states mexican border. thousands of people felt it but there has been no major damage reported. and no tsunami warnings. >>> this morning, it's still too dangerous to go looking for the cause of a major east bay fire. one of our viewers took pictures as the fire was just starting at a fremont business yesterday afternoon. they show flames shooting through the roof and a towering column of black smoke. the fire destroyed c & h enterprises on boggs terrace in fremont and some of the neighbors were told to stay indoors. cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is at the machine shop that burned in fremont with the very latest. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. the smoke has cleared here but the investigation has yet to begin as you mentioned. investigators are expected to be here this morning. once they make sure th

, everyone. it's friday, december 28. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now 5:30. >>> oakland police are working this morning at two crime scenes where a total of three people were killed overnight. about 1:00 this morning, two people were shot to death on mead avenue in west oakland. then about 2:30, one person was killed in a stabbing on walnut street in the seminary area of oakland. police are investigating the possibility the killings are related. >>> one person was killed when a car fleeing a traffic stop in oakland crashed into another car. the chp had pulled a bmw over for speeding late last night. when officers walked toward the car, it took off. a minute later crashed into a lincoln continental that was turning on interstate 580 from 98th avenue. a passenger in the lincoln was kill. the bmw driver ran away but eventually was caught. >>> an 18-year-old shot at an east bay bart station is out of surgery this morning and expected to survive. bart police found the victim in the parking lot of the pittsburg-bay point station a few mints before 7:00 last night. he was taken
